Soso & Dj Kutdown – From the album: All They Found was Water at the Bottom of the Sea (2009)

A lot of people did not get a chance to hear this instrumental project Soso and I slammed together. Here are 5 of the 7 tracks.

The instrumental album produced by soso and DJ Kutdown was release on Hue Records, Japan. Blending their very different but complementary production styles — soso providing the melody arrangements and Kutdown providing the drum sequences — All They Found was Water at the Bottom of the Sea was created in the spirit of collaboration and friendship. The album retains the character that defined much of their earlier work and reflects their ongoing appreciation for beautiful samples and drums that smack. Released February 13th 2009 Hue Records, Japan.

Rob Crooks & Mikel Rondeau LP for FREE w Instrumentals!

FOULTONE RECORDS presents: ROB CROOKS and MIKEL RONDEAU, FUCKIN’ RETARDS. Following up albums with Magnum KI and Pip Skid earlier this year, Foultone’s in-house producer DJ KUTDOWN offers up 12 brand-new tracks of raw, head-knockin’ hip-hop. On emcee duty, Rob Crooks, as hungry as ever, is matched on Kutdown’s production by equally skilled and equally unsated Mikel “Echonawmik” Rondeau. Through the descriptive tales of social gatherings gone awkwardly awry (“Art Party”), to the confessionals of bottomed-out drug addicts (“No Justice”), the story-telling on this album is sometimes fun, other times gut-wrenching, but always believable. Combine that with chant-heavy choruses and rapid-fire verses, and what you end up with is “Fuckin’ Retarded.” Guests include Pip Skid, Unknown Mizery, Influence. Cuts by Dj Kutdown.

Pip Skid releases Skid Row

“You hear the word all the time in write-ups: transcendence. It’s almost become kitch. But finally, an artist who delivers on the promise. Pip Skid, a longstanding legend of Canadian hip-hop presents Pip Skid , an electrifying and energetic blast of socially conscious hip-hop that only solidifies Pip Skid’s position as a force to be reckoned with. His unique brand of hip-hop hits listeners not only on a visceral but cerebral level too.

But why would you expect any less from Pip Skid? Here’s the harsh truth, for those who (unfortunately) might not be familiar with his raging yet thought-provoking brand of hip-hop. Utilizing a range of genres, including driving guitars that elevate his MC skills, Pip Skid has been making music for 17 years and shows no signs of letting up. His live show is renowned for it’s intensity, as the normally reclusive artist sheds his skin and provides a powerful show, leaving audiences clamoring for more.

And Pip Skid does his part to deliver as much of his art as possible to his fans. Starting out with the seminal group Farm Fresh from his native Brandon, Manitoba, Pip held his own at the forefront of a burgeoning hip-hop scene in central Canada in the early 1990’s. He is a cornerstone of the success of indie label Peanuts & Corns Records and has featured on many of their 40 releases. And by day, Pip Skid delivers hip-hop to the youth around him, participating in his “Make Rap Happen” program, which is in high demand with schools and cultural groups. “Make Rap Happen” focuses on the history of hip-hop and teaches children to express themselves through deejaying, performing and recording.

But on March 30th, with the release of Skid Row, Pip Skid will do some weighty self-expression of his own. Tracks like “I Never Knew” presents an infectious, jangly groove with Skid’s trademark socially-frustrated lyrics elevating the track to something, well, transcendent. And the powerful title track echoes some of Cypress Hill’s best work, combining furious guitar solos and fist-in-the-air MC’ing that will no doubt grip audiences with its immediacy. Skid shifts things up on “Ten Dollars” which pays homage to classic, 80’s-influenced hip-hop that will have purists salivating.

There’s no shortage of hip-hop out there today. But Pip Skid presents something different; his brutally honest take on the world around him puts him in a class of his own. And for that, everyone around him is better off.

See Pip Skid live March 13th at the West End Cultural Centre in his hometown of Winnipeg backed by a live band featuring Nestor Wynrush, DJ Kutdown and members of Annihilator, Nova and Banned From Atlantis.”

Magnum K.I Release

Latest release from Magnum K.I (Ismaila, DJ Kutdown & Rob Crooks)

With over a decade in the making, Magnum K.I. is set to release their first full-length self-titled album. Consisting of Michael Arnone (aka DJ Kutdown), Rob Crooks and Ismaila Alfa, this trio feels as though they have reached a new stage in their musical development.

Ismaila, the lead vocalist for Magnum K.I., first gained notoriety in the mid- to late-nineties, as a member of the pioneering hip-hop group, Frek Sho. In 1996, Frek Sho released the first music video by any Manitoban hip-hop artists to be in regular rotation on Much Music. In 1999, Arnone was recruited to join the seminal hip-hop act, as their main audio engineer, producer and DJ. Since then, Ismaila and Arnone have released over 10 CD’s and two vinyl EPs, and have won praise internationally as both a duo and as solo-performers.

In 2005, Magnum K.I. was given a great opportunity when they were invited to join Van’s Warped Tour. As performers on the Code of the Cuts stage, the duo played 9 U.S. cities along side acts from both Definitive Jux and Rhymesayers. Now, with over one hundred shows as Magnum K.I. under their belt, they have shared stages with Ill Bill, the Alkaholiks, DJ A-Trak, and Black Moon, just to name a few.

In 2008, Ismaila and Arnone released their debut EP as Magnum K.I., entitled Gunshy. The EP, which included such hit-worthy songs as the title track, Tired and Sleep, continues to chart on college radio.

In 2009, Magnum K.I. became even more dynamic when they made song-writer/producer Rob Crooks an official member of the group. With Crooks’ added presence on stage, backing up Ismaila’s vocals, and his precocious song-writing ability, the duo-turned-trio are stronger than they’ve ever been. With feel good songs such as the nostalgic Ol’Skool, socially charged songs like Phoenix, and hip-hop pop songs like the infectious Dreaming, Magnum K.I.’s self-titled debut is sure to be noticed by industry insiders and music fans alike.

Foultone Sampler – Foulplay Release

With a slew of new releases scheduled for the New Year, Foultone Records has decided to wrap up 2009 with the Foul Play sampler album. Consisting of brand-new material from Foultone’s own hungry up-and-coming roster, as well as efforts from some noteworthy veterans, this compilation serves as a preview of what can be expected from the label in 2010.

Entirely produced by Dj Kutdown (with the sole exception of OYE!’s “Chan Chan”), Foul Play features as-of-yet unreleased songs from such reputable hip-hop acts as Magnum K.I., Pip Skid and Unknown Mizery. However, while these names may be more familiar to some ears, Foultone is also excited to introduce some fresh new talent to a larger audience. Among the names if these artists are Rob Crooks, Echonawmiks, Ali the Son of Abdul, Influence, Nereo II, Illicit and OYE! (a live band featuring Def 3).

With 20 tracks that mix an innovative interpretation of hip-hop with an old school boom-bap influence, the Foul Play compilation is sure to gain heavy rotation on radio stations and personal stereos alike. It will also go a long way in proving that Foultone Records is a label that is ready to emerge as a force to watch out for in 2010 and beyond.
